Energy Efficient Lighting
Energy efficient lighting has changed over the years. Gone are the days of the oversized light bulbs that won’t fit anything. Today, you can find an energy saver light bulb for just about any make or model of light. Over time, higher watt light bulbs will be phased out and only energy efficient light bulbs will be sold. It is predicted that by the year 2012 in the UK, all 150 watt bulbs will be obsolete.
However there is a drawback to buying energy efficient bulbs. Due to the fact that they are still relatively new to the market, these forms of light bulbs can still be quite expensive to buy. Some argue that you are not actually spending any more money because you are saving in the long run but lower your electric bill and not having to replace the bulbs as often. Also people feel that this lights that are so called energy efficient lights do not emit the same amount of light as the older types of bulbs and therefore it takes more of them to light the same amount of space as one or two of the older, less energy efficient bulbs.
Energy efficient bulbs differ from older traditional bulbs in a number of ways. For example when you turn on a traditional, older model light bulb it will automatically come on. Energy efficient bulbs however, tend to flicker and take a few seconds to illuminate. At one time, these efficient florescent lights were quite large and people often complained that they would stick out longer than the lampshade which one point would deter people from purchasing them. However, steps have been taken to make these bulbs smaller so that they can fit into any lamp.
When looking to buy florescent lights, you should keep in mind that these lights cannot be used with any form of lighting that has a dimmer switch. This is not to say that they won’t work at all, it simply means that you can dim them. If you try to dim them, they will either do nothing or they will turn off completely. However, there are dimmer efficient lights on the market. In October 2007, companies began producing lights that can be used effectively with dimmer lights. When purchasing these, if you are able to find them, it is important to make sure that they are compatible with your model of light.
